NADURIN WHO SAILED THE SEASNadurjana.com wish to pay tribute to those young men who sailed the seas during the difficult times of war. As we will see many died by drowning when their ship was fire on and blown by German torpedoes. The toll was very big for Nadur, as our young men were courageous to sail at those difficult years of war. As we will see six Nadurin drowned on one ship alone the S. S. Newbury, three of them brothers. I hope that we all pay tribute to our men who lost their lives on the seas. We are proud of them for being so strong and courageous to face the seas and the enemy. May God bless them in haven. |

Toni and Angela had ten children. As we read on 3 brothers drowned on the S. S. Newbury. At 27 Guzeppi married Guzeppa Cordina from Nadur on the 15 th, October 1932. They had 3 children. They lived in St. James Street. He was 36 when he drowned. |

Guseppi the eldest wanted his brothers to be with him so he can look after them, something that is not allowed today. He was 20 when he drowned. |

They were coming from Buenos Aires in Argentina on their way to England, when the tragedy happened. |
After few day the illegal emigrants embarked on another ship, this time on the S. S. Barrwhin. When they were in the Atlantic Ocean, they were attacked and this time Frangisku drowned, while Fredu Camilleri survived to tell the whole ordeal. |

He embarked the ship S. S. Ashbury, on the same ship there were another 3 Nadurin. It was Monday 8 th. January, 1945 when the rough seas caused the ship to sink. |
Ganni was married to Lily, an English women and they had no children when he sailed on the S.S. Hawkinge and drowned. On the ship there were two other Nadurin, Koronatu Farrugia tal-Ingliz and Karmnu Muscat ta' Popla. Ganni was 30 when he drowned with 14 others from 31 on board. |
Leli Said (ta-Silga) He was the youngest of 12in the family. His parents were Salvu and Ganna nee Attard. He was born in hospital in Rabat and baptized immediately at St. George Church, as he was in danger of dying. The Said family lived in Church Street. On the 17 th. May, 1939, only 19 years old left home to look for work on the ships together with his brother Pupull. His last voyage was on the ship S.S. Knitsley. On the 12 th. December, 1942 an E-Boat fired a torpedo at the ship and sank it. He was 22 when he drowned.. |

Saverju Muscat (ta-Frencu tad-Dika) He was born on the 8 th. May, 1911. He was named Frangisku Saverju. His parents were Frencu and Karmena nee Sacco. His last voyage was on the S.S. Lock Ranza a 4958 ton merchant ship. They were bombed by an enemy plane, on the 3 February, 1942. Saverju died during the attack.

Guzeppi Attard (ta' Kurun tad-Dobra) He was born on the 11 th. June, 1886. His parents were Koronatu and Marija nee Attard. His family lived in Xandriku Street. His last voyage was on the merchant ship S.S. Thomas Walton. On this ship there were 34 seamen. On the 7 th. December, 1939 the ship was hit by a torpedo and sank. Guzeppi was 53 years when he drowned. |
His business was buying animals and birds such as chicken etc. He was killed on a merchant boat owned by Emanuel Hili from Nadur, when they were attacked by 3 German planes near the Dragonara in the vicinity of tas-Sliema. Pawlu Muscat tas-Smin from Nadur survived the attack. |
Guseppi Camilleri (ta' Guzi tan-Nonu) Born on the 26 December, 1919. His parents were Mikieli and Tereza nee Buttigieg. His family lived in Church Street. He emigrated to England like many of his friends. He married an English girl, Ellen from Middlesbrough and he lived in Manchester. He had a daughter named Colina and worked on merchant ships. His last voyage was on the S.S. Empire Barracuda. On Monday 15 th. December, 1941 his ship was attacked by a submarine and sank. He was 22 years old when he drowned. |
Karmenu Cassar (ta' Brajgu) He was born on the 10 th. June, 1918. His parents were Ganni and Marija nee Bartolo. His family lived in St. Peter and Paul Square. When in England he married, Myra a girl from Cardiff. On the day of the birth of his first child, a daughter, he was called to embark on the S.S. Ashbury. The ship sank in rough weather just after they left the shores of Scotland on the 8 January, 1945. Karmenu was 27 years when he drowned with another 3 from Nadur. |
Toni was a sailor on a merchant boat that sailed between Malta and Gozo. One day the boat hit a mine near the Dragonara and sank. Toni was killed with the explosion. He was 29 years old. |
Koronatu was in Cardiff with Karmnu Muscat ta' Popla when they registered to embark the merchant ship S.S. Hawkinge on the 21 st. July, 1941. On the ship there was another Naduri, Ganni Portelli tac-Cimcem. On Tuesday 29 th. July, 1941 the ship was hit by a German submarine. Koronatu died at 24 years old. Karmnu Muscat ta' Popla survived with another 15 sailors. |
He left Malta to work on the ships His last voyage was on the S.S. Llanern a 4966 ton merchant ship. On Wednesday 26 February, 1941 as they were in the Atlantic Ocean they were bombed by German planes and sank. Koronatu was 27 years old. |
Salvu like many other Nadurin went to England to work and embarked the S.S. Harcolo. While they were in the River Thames a magnet mine came up from the bottom and blew up, causing a big hole in the bottom of the ship. Salvu died from the explosion. He was 32 years old. |
He worked as an able seaman on the S.S. Lancastrian Prince a 1914 ton ship. The ship sank on Sunday 11 th. April, 1943. Ganni was 24 years old. |
Guzeppi Vella (tal-Bekkis) Born on the 14 th. December, 1890. His parents were Mikieli and Karmena nee Farrugia. They lived in Madre Gemma Camilleri Street. When he was 29 years old he married Katerina nee Camilleri from Nadur. They had five children. He had emigrated to America but he returned home and opened a taxi business, but he went back oversea and this time he embarked on the S.S. Ashbury. He drowned with four other Nadurin in rough seas on the 8 th. January, 1945. just few months before the end of World War 11. |
Frangisku was working with the Royal navy on the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Glorious. German Vice Admiral Wilhelm Marschall ignored the orders of his superiors and chased the English ships. On the 8 th. June 1940 he sank a tanker and the ship Orama who was carrying soldiers. Few hours later he torpedoed the H.M.S. Glorious. Frangisku Spiteri was 29 years old when he was killed. There were 32 Maltese sailors on the aircraft carrier. |
Koronatu Muscat (ta' Popla) Born on the 12 th. February, 1915. His parents were Salvu and Angela nee Grima. His family lived in St. John's Street. His last voyage was on the merchant ship S.S. Thorold. On Thursday 22 nd. August, 1940 his ship was bombed by German planes and sank. Koronatu was 25 years old. Two sailors from Nadur survived the tragedy, they were Leli Portelli tac-Cikkar and Anglu Tabone tal-Barmil. |

Anglu Attard (tal-Kumpar) Born on the 13 th. November, 1911. His parents were Guzepp and Karmena nee Hili. His family lived in Hanaq Street. At 24 years old, he married Marie rosa Buttigieg on the 13 th. July, 1935. They had 2 daughters. His last voyage on a merchant ship was on the S.S. Fort McMurray, he embarked on it from London. He became sick and was taken to hospital in Gibraltar. He died almost a year later on the 12 th. february, 1946, aged 35 years old. |
Toni Portelli (ta' Forfora) He was born on the 16 th. April, 1918. His parents were Mikieli and Margerita nee Muscat. They lived in St. Blas Street. He emigrated to England where he embarked on ships, but he became ill and was taken to hospital in England, were he spent six months. He died in hospital age 25 years old, on Tuesday 25 th. May, 1943. |
Guzeppi Portelli (tat-Taljan) Born on the 14 th. November, 1913. His parents were Salvu and Grezzja nee Sacco. His family lived in Ramla Road. Although his family are known as (tat-Taljan) actually they are decedent (tas-Sultan). At 25 years old he married Pawla Mejlaq from Nadur. From this marriage they had a daughter which was named Marija. His last trip was on a Norwegian ship S.S. Atland. His ship sank on the 25 th. March, 1943, and Guzeppi drowned. His body was found and buried in Glasgow, Scotland. |
Mikieli Cini (ta 'Cini) Born on the 11 th. July, 1921. His parents were Frencu u Karmena nee Grech. His family lived in Telegraph Street. At 18 years old he married Emanuela Cascun on the 12 th. August, 1939. The marriage took place at the Collegiate church of Nadur and the celebrant was Archpriest Guzepp Cassar. His last voyage was on the S.S. Nyanza that it was on its way to Brazil but Mikieli got sick and in Rio de Janeiro, he was taken to hospital were he died on Saturday, 26 February, 1944, he was 23 years old. |
